Work experience

2018 – : PhD candidate in the History Department at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Maastricht University
I research how microscopists in Europe and the US worked together in the second half of the nineteenth century. My research draws on sources from American, German, English and Dutch archives, and data collected through a citizen science project, Worlds of Wonder. This project has attracted ca. 2,300 contributors. I give public and academic talks about the history of science and technology, as well as citizen science. I teach undergraduate courses on the history of science and technology, philosophy of science and digitalisation, and I helped design a course for the new BA Digital Society programme at our faculty. I acquired external funding from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (PhDs in the Humanities Grant, ca. €227,000).

September 2017 – December 2017: Post-Research Master Fellowship, Maastricht University
I worked on a research proposal to apply for funding by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.

August 2014 – October 2014: Journalism internship, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
I wrote newspaper articles and conducted interviews.

June – July 2011: Internship with Literaturbüro NRW
I helped organise, promote and host literary events.


2015 – 2017: Research Master (MSc) Cultures of Arts, Science and Technology (cum laude), Maastricht University. Thesis: “Microscopical Science”: Building an Instrumental Community in London’s Periodical Press, 1860 – 1880.

September – December 2016: Historical research internship, University of Leicester
I interned with the ConSciCom research group.

2012 – 2015: Bachelor of Arts (BA) Creative Writing and Cultural Journalism (with distinction), minors: Fine Arts and Cultural Politics, Universität Hildesheim. Thesis: Cyberflâneur and Datadandy: Literary Figures in Digital Time-Space.


2020: Joint winner of the BSHS Singer Prize

2019: Master’s thesis shortlisted for the Gewina-Descartes-Huygens thesis award

2018: UM Student Prize for the best Master’s thesis, awarded by Stichting Wetenschapsbeoefening UM

2016: Young writers award of the city of Düsseldorf (€4,000)

2012: Invitation to Treffen junger Autoren as prize winner of the annual national competition for young German writers
